Phonics

At Laughton we are dedicated to the teaching of phonics and ensuring that every child becomes a reader.

We use the Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics programme. In FS1 this is supported by action songs and rhymes but then once in FS2 and beyond the RWI programme is used alone.

Throughout the teaching of phonics the children are assessed and are taught to their knowledge so although we have a scheme to follow children maybe taught at a different pace if necessary.

What do we teach and When do we teach it?

FS1

Term 1 – Children work on listening for sounds, environmental sounds and listening to each other. Following Phase 1 of letters and sounds as a support for the early phonics skills.

Term 2 – Children are taught the Set 1 sounds.

Term 3 – Children recap Set 1 sounds and begin to segment and blend.

FS2

Term 1 – Recap Set 1 sounds and segmenting and blending skills.

Begin teaching reading through Red Ditty.

Red Ditty books allow children to practise reading short decodable passages. They include practise of the Set 1 sounds. Linked reading activities help children to develop accuracy, fluency and comprehension and prepare children for the longer RWI books.

Term 2 – Children are taught the Set 2 Sounds.

Year 1

Children are phonic screen checked at the end of FS. These scores are then used to group the children to begin with in September. Most children will have spent the previous year in our FS2 and therefore have carried out RWI phonics already. This information is passed on by the FS2 teacher.

Within the first week in Year 1 all children are RWI assessed to check their knowledge of sounds and a sounds tracker is completed to inform future teaching. This same check is then completed at the end of each half term to monitor progress and inform future planning.

Children are then grouped accordingly and taught a RWI session every day.  Children in the same group are taught from the same appropriate level RWI Set book.

Children are then grouped to work on sounds needed.
